How thermal hydrolysis can effect sludge treatment processes

Sludge pre-treatment with thermal hydrolysis process (THP) is a relatively new addition to wastewater treatment and waste handling plants. While, effects of THP on upstream and downstream processes are generally known, quantification of these effects are not straightforward, and depends largely on factors such as substrate characteristics (sludge composition), extent and type of upstream and downstream treatments, and conditions of the thermal treatment process. Nevertheless, quantification of the effects from THP is key, both for economic assessment of any new THP installation, as well as for engineering design of the plant. The project aims to better quantify the benefits from THP and address challenges of THP implementations in new markets.
