Kelp forests dominate Arctic coastlines, where they form diverse and productive habitats that play a vital role in supporting marine biodiversity and driving key ecosystem processes (e.g. nutrient cycling). As climate change accelerates, Arctic kelp forest structure, abundance and functioning is likely to be disrupted. To gain a holistic insight into the consequences of climate change for Arctic kelp forest ecosystems, holistic monitoring of both the kelp forests and their associated assemblages is required. However, to date, information on their associated assemblages, particularly those within the understorey remains limited. The proposed project aims to address this knowledge gap by characterizing kelp understorey assemblages in Svalbard. Through comprehensive field surveys and taxonomic identification, we will generate data on the structure and abundance of understorey assemblages within both intertidal and subtidal kelp forests, alongside exploring environmental variables that may shape them. The robust baseline dataset generated will enhance or understanding of Arctic ecosystems and will provide insights into how these habitats may respond to ongoing climate change. In this way, the research can strengthen conservation efforts and enhance the management of these critical habitats in a rapidly changing world.
