Over hele Europa er det tydelig at dagens jordbrukspraksis ikke lenger er bærekraftig, og at jordbrukssystemene må endres for å opprettholde matproduksjonen og samtidig ivareta det biologiske mangfoldet, økosystemene og de mange fordelene de gir samfunnet.

En løsning på dette er agroøkologi. Agroøkologisk jordbruk har til felles å utnytte naturlige økologiske prosesser for å gjøre jordbruk mer bærekraftig. Dessverre, til tross for mye forskning på agroøkologisk jordbrukspraksis, er bruken av dette svært begrenset i Europa.

I SAFER-prosjektet vil et stort team av europeiske forskere jobbe på tvers av et nettverk med seks 'levende laboratorier', det vil si at gårder i drift på tvers av Europa vil iverksette agroøkologisk praksis. Ved samarbeid på de involverte gårdene, vil bønder, forskere og andre interessenter sammen bidra til økt kunnskap om agroøkologi. Det vil gi mer kunnskap om de landbruksmessige, miljømessige og sosialøkologiske fordelene, samt de mulige avveiningene mellom ulike fordeler.  

Teamet fra Universitetet i Bergen, ledet av prof. Peter Manning, vil være en viktig bidragsyter i prosjektet. De skal oppskalere data fra prosjektet på felt- og gårdsnivå til hele landskap, og simulere endringer i gårdspraksis ved å bruke en kombinasjon av samfunnsvitenskap, fjernmåling og matematisk modellering. Dette vil gi prognoser for hvordan konsekvenser av landsbruksstrategier på landskapsnivå påvirker hele systemet, fra bønder til lokale interessenter. 

Sluttproduktet vil være detaljert kunnskap om hvordan ulike økologiske praksiser påvirker bønder, bygdesamfunn og om hvilke strategier som øker bærekraftig produksjon og flerfunksjonalitet i europeiske jordbrukslandskap. Ved aktiv involvering av bønder og andre interessenter gjennom hele forskningsprosessen, tar vi også sikte på å øke relevansen og bruken av de identifiserte løsningene.

Agroecology offers an opportunity to reconcile agricultural production with human well-being across Europe. However, despite significant evidence that agroecological farming reduces the environmental footprint of agriculture, agroecology is struggling to expand across Europe. This limited adoption emerges from a limited understanding of the cross-disciplinary impacts (agronomic, ecological, economic and social dimensions) of upscaling agroecological farming and recent social unrest following the deployment of agroecological policies indicates that there is an urgent need to address this issue. In addition, a major challenge for agroecology is that no single agroecological practice is suitable for all contexts. Instead, practices need to be targeted and adapted to local socio-ecological contexts, with a strong involvement of stakeholders. Addressing such challenge implies a paradigm shift towards co-design in research and innovation in agroecology.

SAFER will address these challenges by mobilizing a European network of 6 Living Labs distributed across contrasting regions and social-ecological systems, in a multidisciplinary approach. We will: (i) co-design best suited agroecological practices adapted to local social-ecological conditions via a participatory approach that actively involves stakeholders; (ii) quantify the multiple agronomical, environmental and socio-economic benefits and risks of scaling up these agroecological practices from the field to the landscape scale using a similar landscape-scale design across Living Labs; (iii) forecast the whole-system consequences of landscape-scale strategies for farmers and local stakeholders; (iv) identify how local policies, stakeholder demands and the Living Lab methodology can enhance or limit the expansion of agroecological practices

Work at UiB will concentrate on modelling work in (ii) and (iii) but will contribute to all aspects.

AGROECOL 1 SAFER Strengthening Agricultural landscape multiFunctionality through expansion of agroecological farming in EuRope (SAFER)

Co-benefits and synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation and climate change mitigation from a social-ecological systems perspective

CoBioPovCli addresses the question of how to conserve biodiversity, alleviate poverty, and mitigate climate change simultaneously, which are interrelated challenges that threaten human and environmental well-being. The importance of this topic is highlighted by the current context of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, which have exacerbated these problems and their impacts on human and environmental well-being. The main gaps in this topic are: (1) lack of comprehensive data, especially on the dynamics of socio-ecological systems, (2) lack of integrated knowledge, and (3) lack of holistic approaches that consider co-benefits and synergies. CoBioPovCli aims to overcome the limitations and gaps in the current state-of-the-art by developing an integrated spatial planning approach that can achieve win-win synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation, and climate change mitigation from a social-ecological systems perspective.  CoBioPovCli will use literature, models remote sensing data, and other data sources to construct and apply the spatial planning approach, based on case studies, spatial analysis and scenario simulation. CoBioPovCli will generate new knowledge, data and solutions that are conceptually novel, scientifically rigorous and policy-relevant. It will enhance our understanding of the multiple values of biodiversity and its contributions to human well-being under changing climatic conditions. It will provide evidence-based recommendations and best practices for promoting more integrated and sustainable approaches that benefit both people and the planet. CoBioPovCli will also enhance Europe’s scientific and technical capacity and excellence in the field of co-benefits and synergies between biodiversity conservation, poverty alleviation, and climate change mitigation, as well as contribute to Europe’s global leadership and influence in addressing these interlinked challenges.

Mining Impact-prosjektet ble valgt ut som en del av den tredje fasen av den vellykkede JPI Oceans Joint Action om de økologiske aspektene ved dyphavsgruvedrift. Forskningskonsortiet samler eksperter fra Belgia, Danmark, Tyskland, Italia, Nederland, Norge, Polen, Portugal og Storbritannia. Med et totalbudsjett på ca. € 9 millioner (hvorav ca. € 5,7 millioner er finansiert av nasjonale finansiører gjennom JPI Oceans), vil prosjektet fylle kritiske kunnskapshull om dyphavsøkosystemer og den potensielle effekten av gruvedrift på dem. Forskning vil ikke bare fokusere på polymetalliske knutefelt, men også adressere massive sulfidavsetninger, og kombinere eksisterende data med nye ekspedisjoner for å fremme vår forståelse av disse unike miljøene. Dette prosjektet er ment å gi avgjørende vitenskapelig bevis for å støtte informert beslutningstaking om fremtiden for havbunnsmineralutvinning og dens styrende internasjonal og nasjonal lovgivning.

MiningImpact3 har som mål å:
· Vurdere den romlige og tidsmessige variasjonen til dyphavsmiljøet
· Forstå genetiske sammenhenger mellom dyphavspopulasjoner
· Studere effekten av gruve-indusert toksisitet og press på bunn- og pelagiske samfunn.
· Støtte utviklingen av indikatorer for økosystemhelse og terskler for alvorlig skade
· Avanserte styrings- og styringsverktøy, inkludert digital tvillingteknologi
· Sammenligne virkningene av dyphavs- og landbasert gruvedrift

Prosjektet vil dra nytte av tilgang til forskningsfartøyet Sonne levert av det tyske forbundsdepartementet for utdanning og forskning. En ekspedisjon vil undersøke steder av tidligere polymetalliske knutergruveprøver i Clarion-Clipperton-sonen i det nordøstlige ekvatoriale Stillehavet fem år etter nedslaget. Ytterligere ekspedisjoner vil studere økosystemet ved havbunnens massive sulfidforekomster langs den arktiske midthavsryggen, med forskningstokt planlagt til Mohnsryggen i norske farvann i løpet av 2026 og 2027.

MiningImpact is the leading international research project investigating the environmental impacts of
future deep-sea mining (DSM). Since its start in 2015, it has delivered independent scientific research
output and significantly improved our knowledge on polymetallic nodule ecosystems in the Clarion-
Clipperton Zone (CCZ) and the Peru Basin and their responses to anthropogenic disturbances as
documented by >100 peer-reviewed publications (see Section VI). MiningImpact experts have closely
interacted with stakeholder groups (national and international authorities, industry, NGOs, the public),
and in particular the International Seabed Authority (ISA). Noteworthy are contributions to the CCZ
regional environmental management plan (REMP) (ISA, 2021a), draft Guidelines of the Mining Code
(ISA, 2022a, 2022b), and the current Intersessional Expert Group developing binding environmental
threshold values (ISA, 2022c). While the first phase of MiningImpact focussed on decade-old benthic
impact experiments in the CCZ (cruise SO239) and the DISCOL experiment in the Peru Basin (cruise
SO242), during and after the second phase an independent monitoring programme of the first
industrial trials of the pre-prototype nodule collector vehicle Patania II by GSR in the CCZ was delivered
(cruises SO268, IP21, SO295).
In the third project phase (MiningImpact-3), proposed here, we will focus on addressing identified
knowledge gaps (e.g., Boetius & Haeckel, 2018; Amon et al., 2022; Hitchin et al., 2023; Pickens et al.,
2024; Singh, 2021; Weaver et al., 2022) and furthering the understanding of the ecosystems associated
with polymetallic nodules (PMN) and seafloor massive sulphides (SMS) and their vulnerability and
resilience to mining.

Assessing the environmental impacts of deep-sea mining of polymetallic nodules and seafloor massive sulphides

I en tid med historisk og fremtidig oppvarming av kloden trenger vi modeller som kan predikere de fremtidige økologiske konsekvensene. For marine system består disse modellene ofte av en global klimamodell knyttet til ulike temperaturdrevne funksjoner som representerer biologiske og fysiologiske effekter. De fleste slike funksjoner er svært generelle og ofte basert på gjennomsnittsverdier på tvers av arter og system. Det er derfor sannsynlig at prediksjonene blir feil for en enkelt art eller region. Dessverre vet vi lite om hvor vanlige slike feil er, ettersom modellene nesten utelukkende brukes til å predikere fremtiden, og så godt som aldri fortiden.
I denne søknaden plukker vi ut sentrale modell-forventninger og skalerer dem ned til det regionale miljøet for ulike fiskebestander i norske farvann. Forventningene testes og analyseres ved hjelp av eksepsjonelt lange tidsserier, fysiologiske eksperiment og mekanistiske modeller for bioenergetikk og livshistorie.
Foreløpige resultater peker mot at flere fiskearter er mer fleksible, både fysiologisk og adferdsmessig, enn generelle modeller klarer å fange opp. Disse og fremtidige prosjektresultater vil bidra til å lage bedre prediksjoner, og forhåpentligvis også utvide forståelsen vår om hvordan temperatur virker og ikke virker på ulike biologiske prosesser.

In the face of global warming, state-of-the-art eco-physiological theories and their implementation in global models make sweeping predictions that high-latitude fish populations are imperilled from unavoidable physical-physiological mechanisms. These are often rooted in reproductive constraints, and at the base we find two main theories: 

1) The theory of thermal tolerance windows, predicting that spawning fish (with narrow tolerance) will encounter unavoidable thermal bottlenecks in a warming ocean. 
2) The theory of temperature-dependent physiological rates, predicting an unfavourable advancement of fish spawning time, causing offspring to fall out of sync with their zooplankton food – known as trophic asynchrony 

These are predictions, often drawn from controlled laboratory experiments, and in turn extrapolated to global models. But just as downscaling to regional specificities and higher resolution was necessary to improve predictive ability of earth system models, so a similar biological downscaling to particular ecosystems and species is required to assess predictions at the scale relevant for population processes and ecosystem dymanics.

In this project we will downscale these predictive theories for two test species - Atlantic cod and herring, among the best documented fish stocks in the world. Our previous publications and preliminary findings suggest that these species have remarkable plasticity in the timing of spawning, often opposite to that dictated by temperature, and in surprising synchrony with each other and with lower trophic levels.

Here, we pick key expectations from the high-profile literature on biological effects of ocean change and attempt to downscale these to local conditions for key high-latitude fish species using particularly long and detailed timeseries of biological data, remote sensing, high-resolution water column processes, individual behavioural observations, and biological models of bioenergetics and life histories.

Confronting global predictions with local observations.

Solceller (photovoltaics, PV) utgjør på verdensbasis den største bidragsyteren til ny fornybar elektrisitetsproduksjon. Nesten all PV er basert på monokrystallinsk silisium laget med Czochralski-metoden som store ingoter, før de blir kuttet i løvtynne skiver (wafere). NorSun har lenge vært i forkant av utviklingen av høykvalitets monokrystallinsk n-type silisium. I dag er NorSun en av de få gjenværende Europeiske produsentene av monosilisium og wafere.  

Det globale PV-markedet beveger seg i dag mot større dimensjoner på ingot og wafere. I DIAMANT vil vi bruke detaljerte numeriske modeller som beskriver produksjonen av individuelle ingoter, inkludert fysiske egenskaper og kjemiske reaksjoner som forekommer gjennom den mange timer lange trekkeprosessen. Dette vil gi bedre forståelse av krystallvekst og vekstparametere, i tillegg til designet av trekkeovnen. Plasseringen av NorSuns fabrikk i Årdal sikrer en jevn forsyning av grønn elektrisitet med lavt CO2-avtrykk samt kjølevann. Gjennom prosjektet vil resulterende skiver bli behandlet og karakterisert for å verifisere de numeriske modellene og egenskapene til sluttproduktene. Resultatet vil være verdensledende bærekraft og energieffektivitet innen produksjon av solcellewafere.

NorSun is one of the few remaining European producers of monocrystalline ingots and wafers, with production
facilities in Norway. The silicon PV market is trending towards larger wafers sizes where M10 and G12 format wafers
from ingots produced in 36-40” hot zones are increasing most rapidly. Guided by detailed numerical modelling,
DIAMANT will bring together state-of-the-art ingot and crucible dimensions, understanding of growth kinetics and puller design to obtain world-leading sustainability and energy efficiency. Detailed FEM models of the large diameter
pullers will be established, and the physical properties and chemical reactions during the pulling process will be
simulated. The models will be verified towards processing parameters as well as material characterization of the final
product. The increased production volume and the increased yield will improve the overall energy efficiency of the
monocrystalline silicon ingot production.

Hovedmålet i AllEcoSys er å skape bærekraftige og robuste landbrukssystemer ved å implementere et nettverk av ’living labs’ i Europa, noe som vil lette etablering av agroøkologiske tiltak med tanke på forbedret jordhelse, øket biologisk mangfold og fremme av naturlig skadedyrs- og sykdoms-kontroll. Herved søker AllEcoSys å skape fremgangsrike jordbruksbedrifter som bidrar til en bærekraftig matproduksjon og ivaretar miljøet. Prosjektet koordineres av Norges Miljø- og Biovitenskapelige Universitet. Konsortiet består av universiteter, forskningsinstitutter og produsenter i Norge, Danmark, Irland, Tyskland, Frankrike og Romania.

Living Labs vil bli etablert i Norge, Danmark, Tyskland, Frankrike og Romania og prosjektet vil være dedikert til samskaping og interessent engasjement med felles forsøk og eksperimenter for å teste og forbedre agroøkologiske metoder.

AllEcoSys vil vise hvordan ulike jordbruksmetoder påvirker jordkvalitet og mikroorganismer  i jorden,  og karbonlagring i jord, viktig med tanke på å redusere klimaendringer. Vi vil utforske hvordan diversifisering i dyrking og biologisk kontroll kan brukes til å øke plantenes robusthet, understøtte naturlige fiender av skadedyr, øke funksjonelt biologisk mangfold i dyrkingen og minke bruk av pesticider.  Effekten av agroøkologiske jordbruksmetoder på sosiale og økonomiske faktorer vil bli analysert. Resultater fra prosjektet vil bli formidlet nasjonalt og internasjonalt i form av artikler, nyhetsbrev, gårdsbesøk, workshops med mer.

Forventede resultatene av AllEcoSys er agroøkologiske innovasjoner basert på samskaping, økt kunnskap og kapasitet blant bønder, forbedret sosioøkonomisk og miljømessig potensial for agroøkologisk praksis. AllEcoSys vil bidra til å skape et mer bærekraftig jordbruk, sikre matsikkerhet samtidig som miljø- og samfunnsutfordringer tas opp. I tillegg bidrar prosjektet til mer overordnede mål, om klimaendringer, biologisk mangfold og målene til det europeiske grønne skiftet.

AllEcoSys aims to promote sustainable and resilient agricultural systems by implementing a network of living labs across Europe, one in Norway, facilitating adoption of agroecological practices that enhance soil health, increase biodiversity, and natural pest control. Through these practices, AllEcoSys seeks to create prosperous agro-businesses contributing to sustainable food production and environmental conservation. The co-creation process, combining traditional and indigenous knowledge with scientific insights, highlighting the role of producers' expertise and their close collaboration with the research infrastructure is at the core of AllEcoSys project.

The project's specific objectives are to increase soil health and carbon storage, promote crop diversification for resilience against environmental stresses, enhance functional biodiversity for natural regulation, reduce energy, water, and nutrient losses, and strengthen key ecological processes through biological interactions. Additionally, AllEcoSys will assess the socioeconomic impact of agroecology-led farming methods, focusing on drivers, trade-offs, and barriers to implementing new practices.

The expected outcomes of AllEcoSys include agroecological innovations based on co-creation, increased knowledge and capacity among farmers, improved socio-economic and environmental potential of agroecological practices, and methods to implement a co-creation process in a living lab approach. Additionally, the project aims to contribute to broader goals, such as addressing climate change, preserving biodiversity, and supporting the European Green Deal's targets.

By promoting agroecological practices, AllEcoSys aims to create a more sustainable agricultural landscape, ensuring food security while addressing environmental and societal challenges. The project will bring together a diverse consortium of stakeholders, researchers, and farmers to drive the transition towards a more sustainable future for agriculture.

AGROECOL 1 AllEcoSys Agroecology living labs fostering prosperous and sustainable agri-food systems

Moderne matproduksjon, distribusjon og forbruk har uheldige virkninger på jord, miljø og menneskers helse.  Mange av disse skyldes manglende hensyn til økologiske prinsipper slik som mangfold og sirkulasjon av organisk materiale og næringsstoffer. Utilstrekkelig kunnskap hos forbrukere om miljøvennlig og sunn mat bidrar også. Likevel er aktørers begrensete evne til å samhandle målrettet for å håndtere kompleksitet og delvis motstridende hensyn trolig viktigst. 

Prosjektet tar opp denne utfordringen ved å legge agroøkologiske prinsipper, en helhetlig matsystemtilnærming og handlingsrettete prosesser til grunn for endring av jordbrukslandskap. Hovedvirkemiddelet er anskaffelser i utvalgte offentlige kantiner av regional, sesongbasert mat produsert etter agroøkologiske prinsipper. 

Dette skjer i «levende laboratorier» (LL-er) der aktører med ulike perspektiver og roller samarbeider om å forstå utfordringer, utforske helhetlige, mer bærekraftige løsninger og gjennomføre endringer. Deltakerne omfatter bønder, rådgivere, matdistributører, kantinepersonell, -brukere og -eiere, innbyggere, kommuner og fylker, inkludert beslutningstakere. Prosjektet inngår i en europeisk satsing (https://www.agroecologypartnership.eu) og omfatter LL-er i sørvest (PT, ES) og nord (SE, DK, NO).

Samtidig forskes det på hvilke løsninger og endringsprosesser som er bærekraftige under ulike forhold og på drivere og hindringer for ønsket utvikling. Man utvikler også et rammeverk som deltakere i en slik prosess kan bruke for å karakterisere en agroøkologisk omlegging av matsystemer og evaluere virkningen på økologisk, økonomisk og sosial bærekraft.

De samordnete utviklings- og forskningsprosessene bidrar dermed både til ønsket endring og til samfunnslæring om veier til bedret bærekraft i matsystemer. Prosjektet bidrar også til et internasjonalt læringsnettverk om håndtering av bærekraftsutfordringer på tvers av ulike miljø- og sosio-økonomiske forhold og prioriteringer blant dem som deltar.

Partnerskapet retter seg mot et presserende behov for å legge agroøkologiske prinsipper og en matsystemtilnærming til grunn for virksomheter i jordbrukslandskap. Hovedvirkemiddelet for å starte en endring mot dette målet, vil være å innføre målrettede anskaffelser i utvalgte offentlige kantiner av regional, sesongbasert mat produsert etter agroøkologiske prinsipper. Partnerskapet svarer også på et behov for forskning på hvilke løsninger og endringsprosesser som er bærekraftige i økologiske, økonomiske og sosiale perspektiver under ulike forhold. 

Tilnærmingen er tverrfaglig, deltakende og endringsorientert ved at det metodologiske fundamentet er aksjonsforskning i levende laboratorier («Living Labs», LL-er). Dette betyr å bringe sammen en rekke aktører med ulike perspektiver for å samarbeide om å håndtere utfordringer, utforske løsninger og gjennomføre endringer i landskapet. I LL-ene vil det gjennomføres gjentatte sykluser av handlingsforskning. Hver av disse av en stegvis samarbeidsprosess der man (1) kartlegger den nåværende situasjon, (2) tegner et mest mulig omforent bilde av ønsket fremtid, (3) lager en handlingsplan og (4) gjennomfører denne. Parallelt med dette vil prosjektets forskere ved hjelp av kvalitative og kvantitative metoder undersøke forutsetninger for vellykkede LL-prosesser og resultater av disse i form av en agroøkologisk, bærekraftig transformasjon av gårdsbruk, matsystem og landskap.

Prosjektet omfatter LL-er i sørvest (PT, ES) og nord (SE, DK, NO) i Europa, på steder der konsortiepartnerne er aktive i initiativer med flere samarbeidende aktørgrupper. Disse omfatter bønder, landbruksrådgivere, matdistributører, kantinepersonell og -brukere, innbyggere, kommuner og fylker, inkludert beslutningstakere.

Partnerskapet vil gjennom de strukturerte og samordnete utviklings- og forskningsprosessene bidra både til en agroøkologisk endring av vedkommende landskap og ny kunnskap og samfunnslæring om gangbare veier til bedret bærekraft generelt.

AGROECOL 1 LIFT Levende laboratorier for agroøkologisk endring av gårdsbruk, matsystemer og landskap

RURALEX addresses the cumulative crisis of environmental expertise across rural Europe and investigates how this relates to broader processes of societal disenfranchisement. In recent years, many rural parts of Europe have struggled with the local effects of large demographic and associated ecological changes, including human out-migration and the abandonment of traditional forms of agriculture and other nature-based livelihoods. These shifts have led to significant losses in what we refer to as “environmental expertise”: loss of knowledge of the land, loss of important traditional practices, loss of tacit expertise about local environments, loss of cultural knowhow. This crisis is at once intangible and deeply impactful. RURALEX will address those profound changes in socio-ecological knowledges and practices, held by both scientific “experts” and lay persons, through long-term ethnographic engagement and deep mapping tools that will be developed collaboratively by the project partners. The project will determine what is being lost and its impact, how these changes take place, and what processes might be put in motion to ensure that local knowledge is adequately valued at the policy-making level. To do so the project draws on multispecies perspectives grounded in anthropology, history, literary, cultural and sound studies, and the environmental humanities. 

RURALEX is a consortium of six universities in Finland, Estonia, Romania, the UK, and Spain, beside Norway, and comparative and collaborative methods will be employed throughout the project.

Knowledge in Crisis: The Dynamics of Environmental Expertise amidst Rural Change

Disse bekjempingsmetodene har imidlertid betydelige miljøpåvirkninger og kan ha negative effekter både på jordkvalitet og jordliv. I AGROSOIL-prosjektet skal ulike aktører samarbeide om å utarbeide og gjennomføre agroøkologiske strategier for ugrashåndtering i en «Living Lab»-tilnærming, der ugras bekjempes ved å utnytte og støtte jordlivet. En «Living Lab»-tilnærming kombinerer forskning og praktisk utprøving under virkelige feltforhold, hvor dyrkere, forskere og rådgivere samarbeider om å utvikle, teste og forbedre bærekraftige metoder for jord- og ugrashåndtering. Målet er å fremme overgang til et mer bærekraftig jordbruk med redusert avhengighet av kjemiske ugrasmidler og intensiv jordarbeiding.
AGROSOIL er et treårig EU-prosjekt som koordineres av Julius Kühn Institute (Tyskland) med åtte samarbeidspartnere fra Norge (Norsk institutt for bioøkonomi (NIBIO)), Spania (University of Lleida og National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology), Sverige (Research Institutes of Sweden), Nederland (Wageningen University and Research og Wageningen Research), samt Tyskland (Julius Kühn Institute- Institute for Plant Protection in Field Crops and Grassland og Institute for Epidemiology and Pathogen Diagnostics).

In European cropping systems, most weed management practices rely on herbicides and/or intensive tillage. However, these practices have great environmental impacts and may negatively affect soil quality and the soil microbiome (SM). Reducing the reliance on these practices is one of the key ways to make crop production more environmentally and socioeconomically sustainable. So far, transitioning to agroecological weed management (AEWM) at the farm level is hampered by knowledge gaps and insufficient practical evidence. AGROSOIL will use a living lab (LL) approach to co-create and co-implement AEWM strategies that manage weeds by utilising and supporting the SM. This will support the transition to more ecologically-based crop production with less reliance on chemical inputs and intensive tillage.
This project will explore the beneficial potential of soil and plant microbiomes, integrating functional and ecological principles into practical AEWM strategies. The objective is to foster a significant shift towards agroecology across Europe by 1) optimising the diversity and functionality of the SM through AEWM, 2) identifying soil-microbial communities and pathways that support AEWM and 3) developing holistic AEWM systems that significantly reduce chemical inputs and tillage-intensity and support ecosystem services and beneficial biological interactions within agro-ecological cropping systems.
The project intends to build and strengthen regional networks of stakeholders in a LL setting to promote the adoption of AEWM. In the LLs, agro-ecological research is combined with real-world experimental settings where farmers, researchers, and other stakeholders collaboratively create, implement, evaluate and refine sustainable soil and weed management practices. This participatory methodology ensures that innovations are not only scientifically sound but also practically viable and tailored to the diverse needs of European crop production systems.

AGROECOL 1 AGROSOIL Agro-Ecological Soil Optimization for Integrated Weed Management

Glacier retreat is escalating in response to amplified Arctic warming. This exposes large areas of new glacier forefield to seasonal freeze-thaw, wetting-drying cycles and variable oxygen conditions. These physical changes dramatically alter biogeochemical cycling in previously glaciated sediments, facilitating soil and vegetation development in the 21st century. Arctic streams are well-known suppliers of the key nutrient nitrogen (N) to N-limited fjords and coasts, which host lucrative fisheries. However, the influence of glacial retreat and associated soil development on N release to streams, thus fjords and coasts, is a complete unknown. The PULSE project aims to quantify the impact of Arctic glacier forefield exposure on soil N cycling and export to coastal marine environments, and how they are influenced by time since deglaciation, local geology and freeze-thaw cycling. In PULSE, I will measure N release from a field scale chronosequence in a Sub-Arctic glaciated catchment and quantify the forefield soil N contribution to river N runoff. I further use a “space for time” approach to simulate future climate conditions for High Arctic forefield sediments, thus predicting future High Arctic forefield N release. This highly interdisciplinary project combines my background in soil biogeochemistry with glacier hydrochemistry at the Arctic University of Tromsø (UiT). UiT is the ideal host for me to gain new analytical chemistry and modelling skills in order to establish how future glacier retreat will shift sources of riverine N transport to downstream fjords and coasts. A secondment to the Norwegian Polar Institute will additionally expand my scientific expertise and network to include marine monitoring stakeholders directly using my results. PULSE will, therefore, provide a high-impact, first quantification of future potential proglacial soil N leaching across Sub-Arctic to High Arctic climates, which will inform future ecosystem management policies in the Arctic.

Klimaendringene er et faktum, med økende bevis for og vitenskapelig konsensus om den menneskeskapte opprinnelsen, knyttet til det økende nivået i atmosfæren av CO2, en direkte konsekvens av vår industri og levesett. Selv om det er gjort store fremskritt med å elektrifisere våre hjem, transport og industrien ved å bruke fornybare energikilder, vil dette alene ikke kunne dekke alle våre energibehov. Fornybar energi kan ikke levere en konstant mengde elektrisitet (for eksempel er det ikke alltid sol/vind), og strømbruk er ikke alltid der kilden er (avsidesliggende samfunn, skip, fly...).
I dette prosjektet skal vi bruke materialer som kan bruke fornybar energi til å transformere CO2 direkte til flytende drivstoff, og dermed adressere både energi- og klimakrisene. Vi vil bruke en innovativ materialtype med kobber som katalytisk sete, som nylig har vist seg lovende for dette formålet. Målet med prosjektet er en ny og rimelig teknologi som kan forvandle CO2 til et klimanøytralt og anvendbart brensel.

In a bid to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels while converting it into useful chemicals (synthetic fuels methane and methanol), the project undertakes the development of new advanced materials with accurately designed, abundant, and accessible electrochemically active sites. 
Albeit there is a tremendous body of work into electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, several competing products, high process energy demand, and materials costs remain roadblocks for large-scale applications.
Our approach to overcoming the above challenges is the development and assessment of a new family of 3-dimensional metal-organic frameworks based on copper(i) centres, coordinated to two heterocyclic nitrogen and two carboxylic oxygen atoms. Such moieties have recently been suggested as active and selective in CH4/CH3OH production, which are both promising synthetic fuels offering carbon-neutral alternatives of fossil fuels, without a need for infrastructural changes. In addition, MOFs are highly porous and uniform, thereby allowing for a great concentration of accessible redox sites.
We will employ a combined effort of materials design and performance testing both in the liquid- and gas phases, exploring lower- and higher risk approaches, respectively. It should be noted that MOFs have particularly high capacity for local CO2 densification, which is promising for gas-phase processes. The structural and compositional evolution of species will be explored using state-of-the-art spectroscopic and scattering techniques, which, combined with theoretical modelling, will enable us to unravel the relevant reaction mechanisms for selected electrocatalysts.
This effort will help us understand the requirements for the advanced materials to perform well in the electrocatalytic conversion of waste CO2 into value-added synthetic fuels methane and methanol, and thus to optimise performance. 
Such approach will greatly contribute to the green energy transition offering a reliable alternative for energy storage.

Supporting Policy Regulations and Interventions to Negate aggravated Global diarrheal disease due to future climate Shocks

BACKGROUND: Global warming and climate extremes such as heavy precipitation, flooding, and drought are increasing risks for waterborne diarrheal disease. While these effects already burden low- and middle-income countries, where diarrheal diseases are the second leading cause of childhood deaths, Europe has shared and underappreciated vulnerabilities. There is an urgent need to prepare and protect our water and communities from these threats. AIM: To inform key climate, environmental, and health adaptation policies, in order to support and prepare citizens, communities and governments by better measuring the impact of future climate shocks on the burden of water-borne diarrheal diseases. APPROACH: We bring together scientists from climate, environment, health, and social sciences to collaborate with communities, industry, public authorities and policy makers across socioeconomic settings. We will model the future impact of global climate change, on local water quality and quantity, and diarrheal disease outcomes. In case studies in Ghana, Tanzania, Italy, and Romania, we will measure current interactions of climate, behaviour, and water quality on pathogen-specific diarrheal disease risks and the safety of water supply systems. We will engage individuals and communities to understand situated understandings and practices to improve risk communication and ownership. With policy makers, we will design appraisal structures to assess the economic impact and value of planetary health interventions to prevent climate-related diarrheal disease. IMPACT: SPRINGS will improve integrated climate and health surveillance, create climate-resilient water supply systems, engage citizens and stakeholders, and use evidence-based value assessments to prioritise interventions to prevent climate-induced diarrheal disease.  Long term adaptive capacity and climate-resilience will increase in Europe and beyond, preventing unnecessary illness and deaths from waterborne diarrheal disease.
