About Prosjektbanken

Kystområder og strender i Øst- og Sørøst-Asia står overfor flere utfordringer i dag. De opplever erosjon og tap av arter som følge av avskoging, utbygging av infrastruktur og tropiske stormer, som blir sterkere og hyppigere på grunn av klimaendringer. De sliter også med problemer som omfattende plastforurensning, masseturisme, overfiske og giftig avfall. Coastal Lives in Flux (CLiF) fokuserer på disse kystområdene, menneskene som bor der, og reaksjonene deres på disse utfordringene. Folk som lever her kan miste inntekt eller oppleve helse- og sikkerhetsrisikoer som følge av miljøproblemene, men de er ikke bare passive ofre. De er også kreative aktører som finner nyskapende løsninger eller, i det minste, måter å takle utfordringene på. De finner for eksempel nye inntektskilder som økoturisme, etablerer sosiale bevegelser for å protestere mot ødeleggende byggeprosjekter, eller bruker kunst og ritualer for å vise tilstedeværelse og kulturell identitet. 

CLiF studerer noen av disse initiativene gjennom dyptgående etnografisk feltarbeid i Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam og Filippinene. Hvilken virkning har infrastrukturprosjekter som sjømurer, naturvern og turistutvikling på disse samfunnene? Og hvordan håndterer folk slike utfordringer gjennom sosiale og kulturelle aktiviteter? 

CLiF bygger på teorier og innsikter fra flere fagfelt, blant annet antropologi, politisk økologi, utviklingsstudier, religionsvitenskap, asiatiske områdestudier og miljøhumaniora. Prosjektet vil utvikle nye teorier som kan bygge bro mellom noen av disse feltene. Prosjektet har en sterkt samarbeidsorientert karakter, med felles feltarbeid, medforfatterskap i publikasjoner og inkludering av lokalsamfunn i akademisk forskning og skriving.

Coasts and beaches in East and Southeast Asia are among the places where the impact of the Anthropocene is at its most visible. Coastal Lives in Flux (CLiF) focuses on these coastal regions, the people who live there, and their responses to environmental problems such as climate change, plastic pollution, the loss of companion species, and intrusive infrastructural interventions. Throughout the region, people have found ways to navigate and adapt to these challenges, turning coastal regions into places not only of risk and loss but also of creativity and reinvention – through the creation of new livelihoods, the emergence of new movements for environmental and social justice, or the resurgence of cultural practices such as rituals and storytelling. CLiF studies some of these responses through in-depth ethnographic research, conducted in Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and the Philippines. It asks: How are coastal communities in Asia today affected by environmental problems such as climate change, plastic pollution, erosion, and biodiversity loss? What is the impact of infrastructural or political interventions such as seawalls, nature conservation projects, and tourist development upon these communities? And how do members of these communities adapt to, navigate, and resist such crises, risks, and interventions? Building upon insights from a variety of disciplines, CLiF will contribute to three bodies of theory in particular: 1) theories from political ecology and anthropology on liminal spaces and "sacrifice zones"; 2) environmental humanities theories on more-than-human landscapes and "wet ontologies"; and 3) new approaches in religious studies to the study of ritual and ecology. Methodologically speaking, CLiF rests on in-depth ethnographic research, complemented with historical and literature research. The project has a strongly collaborative character, involving collective fieldwork, coauthored publications, and the inclusion of local interlocutors and stakeholders.

Coastal Lives in Flux: Environmental Crisis, Resistance, and Ritual Innovation Across Asia (CLiF)

EMPOWERALL etablerer fire ungdomsledede «agroøkologiske levende laboratorier» (Agroecological Living Labs) på tvers av Europa – altså reelle steder der unge bønder samarbeider med forskere, rådgivere, sivilsamfunn og offentlige myndigheter for å finne ut hvordan bærekraftig jordbruk faktisk ser ut i praksis, ikke bare på papiret. Disse laboratoriene forankres i langsiktige forskningslandskap (LTSER-områder) og kobles til eLTER-forskningsinfrastrukturen, slik at de kan dra nytte av miljø- og landbruksdata som er samlet inn over mange år, og som utgjør prosjektets vitenskapelige ryggrad. Denne riggen gjør at EMPOWERALL kan teste endringer, måle effekter, lære raskt og unngå å gjenta de samme feilene i ulike regioner.
Hvert Living Lab fungerer som et praktisk “eksperimentnav”. Deltakerne samskaper og prøver ut tre typer løsninger: teknologiske innovasjoner, naturbaserte praksiser (som jordhelse, biologisk mangfold og vannholding), og sosiale innovasjoner – for eksempel nye måter å organisere samarbeid, rådgivningstjenester eller lokale markeder på. Fordi hver region har ulike jordtyper, klima, økonomi og tradisjoner, fokuserer prosjektet på løsninger som passer den lokale virkeligheten – og vurderer deretter hvilke elementer som kan overføres og skaleres andre steder.
Prosjektet jobber i gjentatte «lære–justere–lære igjen»-sykluser, og bruker systemtenkning for å forstå årsak–virkning i jordbrukssystemer. I stedet for å peke på enkeltfaktorer, kartlegger EMPOWERALL tilbakekoblingssløyfer: hva som driver bønder i retning av gode praksiser, hva som holder dem tilbake, og hvor små endringer kan utløse større omstillinger. Styring og organisering er også en del av eksperimentet: Ungdomsråd (Youth Advisory Councils) bidrar til å styre beslutninger slik at arbeidet forblir rettferdig, relevant og reelt ungdomssentrert.

EMPOWERALL establishes four Youth-led Agroecological Living Labs (AELLs) within long-term socio-ecological research platforms (LTSER), leveraging the eLTER Research Infrastructure to accelerate just, science-based agroecological transitions. Each AELL functions as an experimental hub where young farmers, researchers, advisors, civil society and authorities co-create and test technological, nature-based and social innovations tailored to local biophysical, political-economic and socio-cultural conditions. Iterative learning cycles, systems-thinking tools and participatory governance (with Youth Advisory Councils) ensure solutions are grounded, equitable and replicable. WP1 defines the AELLs, maps stakeholders and agricultural Knowledge and Innovation Systems (AKIS), and sets the foundations of youth-centred governance. WP2–WP3 diagnose social innovation, governance and business model dynamics and develop causal loop diagrams (CLDs), culminating in a Transformative Archetypes Catalogue—mid-range feedback patterns that reveal leverage points for change. WP4 synthesises results into transition pathways per AELL, designs roadmaps for other LTSER Platforms, and identifies policy/gov­ernance levers for upscaling across Europe, while clarifying how AELLs and LTSER/eLTER mutually reinforce each other. WP5 delivers a multi-channel DEC strategy (website, social media, videos, infographics, actionable knowledge) to reach diverse audiences. WP6 ensures sound management, ethics and data protection (DMP). By coupling youth-driven experimentation with the backbone of eLTER/LTSER data, expertise and standard observations, EMPOWERALL creates robust pathways to scale context-sensitive agroecological practices and policy mixes that can be adapted across regions.

AGROECOL2 Empowering Young Farmers to Coordinate Agrifood Transformations through Engaged RIs and Agroecological LLs

Using seed functional traits to understand and predict alpine plant responses to global climate change

To improve predictions of how plants may persist or disappear from ecosystems, we urgently need improved understanding of how climate change affects a critical and vulnerable plant life-history stage and transition–seeds and seed recruitment. Seed ecology is a growing discipline, yet it lacks some of the recent standardised methods and centralised resources of other plant sciences, such as the core databases and methodological handbooks that have spurred plant functional trait innovation since the early 2000s.  Alpine areas can provide a glimpse of our future under climate change because they are warming faster than global averages and because alpine ecosystems are temperature-limited and hence more vulnerable to warming. Long-term warming experiments demonstrate that this vulnerability can alter vegetation structure, which in turn may change vegetation function, particularly carbon cycling. To predict which plants will persist, we need better data and frameworks for understanding how seeds and seed recruitment in the alpine respond to warmer climates.  I will (1) publish a standardised handbook of core seed trait measurements, (2) collect new trait data from seed collections and harmonise existing datasets to form a publicly accessible alpine seed trait database, (3) establish a functional trait-based framework of seed ecology, and (4) experimentally test how seeds respond to warming as a demonstration of how these new resources can rapidly expand our understanding of climate change effects on seed ecology.

Glacier retreat is accelerating in response to climate warming, leading to an increase in the number and total area of proglacial lakes globally. Proglacial lakes have the potential to modulate glacial runoff via sediment immobilization and in-lake biogeochemical cycling, with implications for the productivity and biodiversity of valuable downstream ecosystems. However, a quantitative understanding of the impact of proglacial lake modulation on the export of glacier-derived suspended sediment (SS), nutrients and organic carbon (OC) is currently lacking. POND will fill this critical knowledge gap by quantifying relationships between proglacial lake physical characteristics and changes in riverine fluxes of SS, nutrients and OC in rapidly deglaciating landscapes in Norway using a combination of remote sensing, field sampling, and biogeochemical analyses. Results will be used to inform a novel and globally relevant conceptual model of proglacial lakes as 'biogeochemical modulators' of glacial runoff. POND will be hosted at UiT the Arctic University of Norway, facilitating unrivaled low-carbon impact access to Arctic and temperate glacial field sites. This highly interdisciplinary project unites my track record in glacial dissolved organic matter chemistry with UiT's expertise in glacier biogeochemical cycling and landscape evolution at regional to global sales. A secondment at the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate will facilitate access to glacier and glacial lake inventories, supporting my training in the use of remote sensing and ensuring close collaboration with a water resource management stakeholder with direct interest in POND research findings. POND's unprecedented quantitative evaluation and conceptual model of the biogeochemical impacts of proglacial lake growth on SS, nutrient and OC export to downstream ecosystems will inform future ecosystem management and policy in glacially-influenced mountain regions worldwide. 

Proglacial lake impacts on the export of Organic carbon and Nutrients to Downstream ecosystems

This work package will focus on addressing the complementarity aspects of using bottom-up technology-rich energy system modelling approaches in tandem with macro-economic analysis with CGE modelling. Namely, we will utilize results and data from the IFE-TIMES-Norway model, using socio-technical transition scenarios developed under the context of the 
FME NTRANS. Using that as basis, macro-economic perspectives and analysis will be led by Statistic’s Norway using the CGE model SNoW.

WP2 will identify wider economic effects and potential trade-offs for numerous low-carbon pathways for Norway 
towards 2050. The work will thus require strategic interdisciplinary alignment from these different modelling perspectives, and will include close coordination for handling data exchange and for assessing key indicators from the scenarios, and eventually re-examining ESM model assumptions based on the results from the CGE analysis.

WP2 – Energy System modelling and Socioeconomic models

Mikroorganismer—usynlige for det blotte øye—holder i det stille jordens livsopprettholdende system i gang. Blant de mange såkalte økosystemtjenestene de leverer, produserer de oksygenet vi puster inn og resirkulerer næringsstoffer som gjør at planter kan vokse. Dessuten er mikroorganismer ikke så enkle og primitive som vi ofte fremstiller dem og de fortsetter å overraske. For eksempel har forskere som studerer cyanobakterien Synechococcus elongatus vist at disse mikrobene måler lengden på dagen og bruker denne informasjonen til å forberede seg på sesongskifter. Med andre ord reagerer ikke disse mikrobene bare på endrede miljøforhold, som synkende temperatur når høst går over i vinter. De registrerer at dagene blir kortere og forbereder seg på de kaldere temperaturer. De cellulære endringene de setter i verk, sikrer overlevelsen deres under vinterlige forhold. Nøkkelen bak S. elongatus evne til å måle fotoperioden er circadianske klokka deres, en molekylær mekanisme som synkroniserer mikrobenes aktivitet med 24-timers lys-mørke-sykluser. Circadianske klokker er svært utbredte interne tidtakere som blant annet styrer søvn, vekst og stoffskifte. Slike klokker finnes hos mennesker, dyr, planter og sopp, og jo øyere vi undersøker, desto flere eksempler finner vi også hos mikrober, inkludert jordmikrober.

Prosjektet vårt, Winter-is-coming, stiller spørsmålet om jordmikrober også bruker circadianske klokker og fotoperiodisk informasjon – informasjon om lengden på dag og natt – til å forberede seg på kritiske sesongskifter, som overgangen fra høst til vinter. I jordøkologisk sammenheng kan svaret på dette spørsmålet få store konsekvenser, ettersom klimaendringer øker høsttemperaturene og skaper et misforhold mellom temperatur og daglengde. Et slikt misforhold kan true økosystemtjenestene som leveres av jordmikrober, for eksempel karbonlagring i jord og resirkulering av næringsstoffer, noe som igjen påvirker jordhelse, plantevekst og utslipp av klimagasser fra jord.

Soils store approximately 1,500 gigatons (Gt) of carbon, more than all plants (~560 Gt) and the atmosphere (~750 Gt) together. Arctic and sub-Arctic regions store around half of the global soil carbon and harbour the highest abundances of soil microorganisms. At the same time, Arctic and sub-Arctic regions warm up to 4-times faster than global average. Thus, current and future carbon fluxes in and out of high-latitude soils play a key role in the global climate system. Carbon losses from soils in the form of CO2 emissions from soils to the atmosphere are controlled by the microbial communities residing in the soils and their activities, with seasonality being a critical driver of soil microbial activities. While temperature and water are classical regulators of soil seasonality, recent research has suggested a role of microbial biological timekeeping. Diverse bacteria including the gastrointestinal bacterium Klebsiella aerogenes, the plant growth promoting soil bacterium Bacillus subtilis, and the cyanobacterium Synechoccus elongatus have evolved circadian (~24-h) clocks. And a recent report revealed that S. elongatus uses its circadian clock to measure photoperiod (i.e., day length) and use this information to prepare for critical seasonal transitions. This unexpected discovery raises the pivotal question: How widespread is photoperiodic timekeeping in microorganisms? In the context of soil ecology, answering this question may have dramatic implications by determining if soil ecosystem services, such as soil carbon storage, are threatened by climate-change-derived mismatches between photoperiod and temperature. Winter-is-coming is a foundational project that will combine high-resolution metatranscriptomics with sophisticated experimental design to reveal seasonal changes of soil microbiomes and their 24-h rhythms and determine whether soil microorganisms employ photoperiodic timekeeping to prepare for the critical seasonal transition from autumn to winter.

Winter-is-coming – But do soil microorganisms know and prepare accordingly?

This project addresses the Nordic region’s fossil-free transition by developing an advanced modelling framework that links the energy system model GENeSYS-MOD with the macroeconomic model REMES-EU. Traditionally, energy models assume fixed demand, limiting insight into economic feedbacks. By making energy demand endogenous via integration with REMES-EU, the project enables dynamic responses to prices, policies, and technological change, enhancing the realism and policy relevance of long-term scenarios.

The framework will simulate the EU Reference Scenario and at least one Energy Vision 2060 scenario (e.g., REPowerEU++ or Go RES), which explore diverse, plausible energy futures. These scenarios incorporate dimensions such as innovation, geopolitical uncertainty, and social acceptance, and are quantified through GENeSYS-MOD and a Qualitative-to-Quantitative (Q2Q) matrix.

Key research questions include: how endogenous demand reshapes electricity generation, employment, and sectoral impacts; and how model integration can inform infrastructure decisions like Nordic interconnectors. Focus areas span macroeconomic analysis, energy-economy feedbacks, and regional impacts of strategic investments.

The project employs a hybrid, iterative linking method, ensuring economic and technical consistency. It draws on open-source tools, robust data (Eurostat, ENTSO-E, TYNDP), and FAIR principles. Scenario ensembles will capture uncertainty.

A five-stage plan guides implementation: calibration, scenario design, model linking, policy analysis, and dissemination. The interdisciplinary team—experts in macroeconomics, energy modelling, and uncertainty—ensures methodological strength. Gender perspectives and inclusivity are also integrated into both team composition and research design. The project supports the Nordic Energy Systems Programme by delivering transferable insights for policy and cross-border coordination.

The Nordic Energy Systems Programme - WP 2 – Energy System modelling and Socioeconomic models

Lakselusen er en liten parasitt som skaper store problemer for oppdrettsnæringen og villaks. Den lever av fiskens hud og blod, og etterlater sår som gir stress og påfølgende infeksjoner. Dagens medisinske behandlinger mister effekt fordi lusa har utviklet resistens, mens alternative mekaniske metoder skader og stresser fisken. Derfor er det et stort behov for nye løsninger.

Prosjektet vårt fokuserer på et spennende spørsmål: Hvordan klarer hunnlus å fylle eggene med næringsstoffene som larvene trenger for å overleve før de finner en vert? Disse næringsstoffene produseres i én del av lusa og transporteres gjennom kroppen til eggene, men den nøyaktige opptaksmekanismen er ukjent. Vi skal identifisere proteinene som gjør denne prosessen mulig.

Å forstå dette systemet kan åpne for innovative strategier. Én tilnærming er å levere proteiner som ødelegger eggene, slik at hunnlus blir sterile. En annen er å bruke samme vei til å introdusere genredigeringsverktøy som CRISPR, noe som vil gjøre det mulig å studere lusas biologi i detalj og avdekke hvorfor den blir resistent mot behandling.
På sikt kan denne kunnskapen gi banebrytende metoder for å bekjempe lakselus og beskytte både oppdrettslaks og villaks.

Salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) are parasitic copepods that pose a major challenge to Atlantic salmon aquaculture. Over time, the parasite has developed resistance to several delousing treatments, significantly reducing their effectiveness. To develop new and sustainable control strategies, a deeper understanding of salmon louse biology is essential.

One critical biological process is the transfer of nutrients into developing eggs (oocytes), which support embryo development. These nutrients are synthesized in a specialized organ, released into the hemolymph, and subsequently imported into the oocytes. This project aims to investigate and exploit the molecular mechanism underlying this uptake, which relies on specific oocyte-targeting peptides (OTPs) that direct attached proteins into the oocytes.

By identifying, characterizing, and synthesizing OTPs, we aim to develop a delivery system capable of transporting functional proteins into salmon louse oocytes. This could enable novel treatment strategies that impair fertility and reduce parasite pressure in salmon farms. Selected treatment concepts will be evaluated within the project.

In parallel, we will use OTPs to deliver the CRISPR-associated enzyme Cas9 into oocytes, enabling gene editing in salmon lice for the first time. This approach overcomes a major barrier in applying CRISPR/Cas9 technology to this species—efficient delivery into embryos. Using this method, we will investigate the roles of specific genes in development, survival, and drug resistance, providing new insights into salmon louse biology and potential targets for control.

Deciphering Nutrient Uptake Mechanisms in Salmon Louse Oocytes for Gene Editing and Treatment Development

Peering at the micromechanics of the brittle-ductile transition and its effects on fluid flow

Supercritical geothermal energy is a new frontier in the pursuit of renewable, carbon-free energy. However, the extreme pressure and temperature conditions where supercritical reservoirs are found in Earth's crust coincide with the transition zone where rocks shift from brittle to ductile behaviour. Historically, this transition was believed to be a cut-off for fluid circulation, but recent findings have challenged this view, highlighting the urgent need to understand the mechanical and hydrological behaviours of rocks within this rheological domain. PERCOLATE proposes to investigate the mechanics of rock deformation and fluid flow at this brittle-ductile transition by integrating advanced rock deformation techniques, X-ray 4D imaging, machine learning-based image analysis and fluid flow modelling This project leverages my extensive experimental experience and enriches my expertise with valuable new skills in imaging and machine learning. Ultimately, PERCOLATE will contribute to the EU New Green Deal’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 by advancing our comprehension of geothermal energy and deformation in the crust.

Skogen kan beskytte oss mot naturfarer, men bare hvis den forvaltes riktig. Når trær hogges på feil sted i for stort omfang øker risikoen for jordskred og snøskred, mens klimaendringer og mål om biologisk mangfold legger ytterligere press. I Norge er forvaltning av vernskog utfordrende på grunn av konflikter mellom tømmerproduksjon, arealbruk og miljømål. Nesten 90 prosent av norske skoger er privateid, og dagens regelverk gir få insentiver til å drive skogen til å forvalte dem for risikoreduksjon.

FORTRESS skal bygge ny kunnskap om hvordan skog kan brukes som naturbasert løsning for klimatilpasning. Prosjektet fremmer en helhetlig skogforvaltning som balanserer samfunnssikkerhet, biologisk mangfold, friluftsliv og økonomiske interesser – inkludert rettferdige insentiver for grunneiere.

Prosjektet ledes av Norges Geotekniske Institutt (NGI) og samler forskningspartnere (NMBU, NIBIO, Høgskulen på Vestlandet og BFW, Østerrike), offentlige aktører (NVE, Landbruksdirektoratet, Statsforvalterne i Vestland, Innlandet og Trøndelag, samt kommunene Lom, Sunnfjord og Sogndal) og private aktører (Skogkurs, Skog og Skred AS, WoodWorks!, Allskog, AT Skog, Glommen-Mjøsen Skog og Visit Jotunheimen).

Forskerne vil undersøke hvordan ulike typer skog og skogstruktur påvirker skredrisiko gjennom feltstudier, kvantifisere skogens beskyttende effekt og utvikle forbedrede metoder for kvantitativ risikovurdering samt en verktøykasse for verdsetting av økosystemtjenester.

Resultatene skal bidra til å utforme retningslinjer for regional arealplanlegging, slik at skogforvaltning i bratte områder kan brukes aktivt som et tiltak for klimatilpasning. FORTRESS vil også bygge kompetanse i forvaltning og næringsliv gjennom opplæring, etterutdanning og kunnskapsutveksling på tvers av tre nøkkelsektorer: arealplanlegging, skogbruk og naturfarehåndtering.
Målet: forskningsbaserte løsninger som øker samfunnssikkerheten, fremmer biologisk mangfold og støtter en robust grønn økonomi.

Forests significantly reduce landslide and avalanche risks, while logging—especially clearcutting—can increase them. A policy of protection forest management is implemented in many countries, prioritizing societal and environmental benefits over timber production. There, harvesting is effectively banned or heavily restricted and in many cases protection forests are owned and maintained by the state. However, in Norway, where nearly 90% of forests are privately owned, economic concerns and limited risk awareness have hindered such policies despite the common occurrences of landslides and avalanches. Regulations currently under development will stipulate that protection forests must be suitably managed, but more information is needed to identify which forests and define what suitable management is. The current lack of information and quantification of risk is delaying policies and causing tensions between stakeholder groups. It can already be anticipated that there will be considerable extra demands on regional authorities, area planners and forest managers, who will be responsible for prioritising areas for protection forests and communicating those decisions. Further, the requirement for protection must also be balanced with existing Ecosystem Service provision, among them the goal of protecting 30% of the land area for biodiversity, and the need for a sustainable bioeconomy with increased timber production. Currently, all sectors are poorly equipped to address these land use conflicts and FORTRESS seeks to resolve this through interdisciplinary research to understand and quantify the relevant processes, creating a dedicated knowledge base through which to provide training and applicable tools for practitioners.
